Be Careful What You Ask For

Matthew 14:28 And Peter answered Him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid Me come unto thee on the water.

The wind is blowing hard, the waves are crashing, and the boat is rocking, but Peter says, “If it’s you, Lord, ask me out on the water”. My Dad always said, “be careful what you ask for”, you might get something you didn’t bargain for. Peter surely didn’t realize that walking on water, while looking glamorous, is treacherous and fearful. So, God gives him what he wants and as soon as he’s out on the water he begins to sink, death is imminent. Of course, Jesus knows all along that Peter will need Him, so He reaches down and lifts him back up out of the water. It’s impossible to walk on water, just try it, but you can walk on faith. While Peter was focused on Jesus he was walking on faith, but when he focused on the water he sunk. Peter’s request was audacious, but he didn’t realize that audacious requests will require audacious faith. It might be good for us to make sure our faith tank is full before we ask God to do the miraculous. We may find ourselves standing on faith in a storm. May God strengthen our faith is my prayer.
