Blessing or Curse

Matthew 12:36, 37 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. (37) For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.

One day during Junior High football practice my coach became very angry with me because he thought I wasn’t giving my best effort. In his anger he called me a name that should never be spoken over any child. I didn’t understand how powerful that moment was until I realized many years later that I was still dealing with feelings about what he had spoken. The cursing of that moment has now been overcome by many moments of spoken blessing over my life and I thank God for it. Jesus said that we will be judged by our own words, even the seemingly idle words we speak. Our words will either justify us or they will condemn us. The power of the spoken word is undeniable. A good man pulls good things out of the good treasure of his heart. I say let’s allow God to fill our hearts with His Word, His love, and His compassion. Let’s take control of our tongue and only allow those things that are pleasing to God to come out of our mouths. May we only speak blessings and never speak curses is my prayer.
