Genesis 11:4 They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
Maybe that was the beginning of man’s problem at Babel; “let us make for ourselves a name”. It seems like everybody wants to make a name for themselves, whether it’s athletes, the average person, or politicians. Working harder to make more money, training harder to be the best, searching for that new invention, or stabbing people in the back to get ahead, all done with the goal of being famous and making a name for ourselves. The scripture records in Philippians 2:7 that Jesus “made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant.” We certainly should work hard, do our best, and invent new products, but our goal should be to serve others not make a name for ourselves. As we do our work as unto the Lord and serve others we will make God’s name great, not ours. May we bring glory to God’s name is my prayer.
